Agneepath Scheme is a step that is initiated for the recruitment of 46,000+ Agniveers to the Indian Army, Indian Navy, and India Air Force. On Tuesday, Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh announced the Agnipath recruitment scheme for the defense forces at the National Media Centre, Delhi, saying that under this scheme, “Indian youth would be granted an opportunity to be inducted into the Armed services,” news agency ANI reported. He further said that the project is a “transformative initiative” and will increase “employment opportunities.”
Along with Defence Minister, three services chiefs, Gen Manoj Pande, Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari & Admiral R Hari Kumar, were also present at the scheme’s announcement.

Agnipath Recruitment Scheme
Under the Agnipath recruitment scheme for the defense forces, troops will be recruited only for four years.
Two weeks ago, the three service chiefs briefed Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the Agnipath scheme for soldier recruitment which is said to pave the way for the induction of troops into the forces for short-term tenures.
The scheme has been planned and is being implemented by the Department of Military Affairs.
The new scheme Agnipath, under which youngsters would join the forces for four years and serve the country. The report stated that the project is a part of the Government’s efforts toward reducing expenditure and the age profile of the defense forces.
The scheme would also help in significantly widening catchment areas for recruitment.
Towards the end of the four years of service, 80 percent of the soldiers will be relieved from duty, and the armed forces will further assist such soldiers with employment avenues. Initial calculations by the armed forces projected thousands of crores in savings in pay, allowances, and pension if a considerable number of soldiers are taken in under the tour of duty concept.
The best among the recruited youth could also get an opportunity to continue their service in case vacancies are available. According to the report, the DMA had studied similar recruitment models in eight countries before developing the Indian model.
The recruitment process for personnel below officer rank between the ages of 17-and-a-half to 21 years will reportedly begin in the next three months.
“The scheme will increase employment opportunities and aim to create a youthful profile of the armed forces. The ‘Agniveers ‘will be given a good pay package and an exit retirement package after four years of service,” Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said at a press conference after a Union Cabinet meeting.

Financial Package: The composite annual package for the first year would approximately be Rs 4.76 lakh with upgradation in the fourth year to around Rs 6.92 lakh. Applicable allowances include risk and hardship, ration, dress, travel, etc.
Seva Nidhi: As reported by News18 earlier this month, the scheme includes a Seva Nidhi package, which entails that, every month, a soldier will contribute 30% of his payments, and the Government will also contribute an equal amount. At their retirement after four years, the soldiers will receive around Rs 11.71 lakh, exempted from Income Tax.
Sources told me soldiers would be provided with two options to claim the Seva Nidhi package. One option would be to credit Rs 1 lakh into the soldier’s account when he is released after four years and convert the remaining amount into bank guarantees for raising loans. The second is to credit the entire amount to the soldier’s account in one go.
Death Compensation: In the unfortunate event of death, the financial package for soldiers under Agnipath includes non-contributory life insurance cover of Rs 48 lakh, additional ex-gratia of Rs 44 lakh for death attributable to service and pay for the unserved portion up to four years, including the Seva Nidhi component.
Disability Compensation: In case of disability, soldiers will be given compensation based on the percentage of disability laid down by medical authorities. Soldiers will receive one-time ex-gratia of Rs 44 lakh/Rs 25 lakh/Rs 15 lakh in the event of 100%/75%/50% disability, respectively.
On Completion of Tenure: Soldiers candidates will receive Seva Nidhi benefits, certificates, and credits for higher education after the four-year tenure. Agniveers can apply voluntarily to enroll in a regular cadre.
Sources had told that the Army is rooting for the retention of maximum soldiers, which can be gradually reduced over a while instead of an immediate cut.
They added that it is also being explored if PMO can absorb the trained human resources released from the Army at the end of their short-term contracts into the paramilitary forces, reducing the latter’s cost of training its personnel.
